Spring Adventures

This spring has been full of new experiences. Quince has grown so much this spring, with our second year of pre-school drawing to a close and kindergarten waits on the other side. We started spring by attending Emerald City Comic Convention. Quince wanted to dress up as a Jedi using a cape I made him last fall for halloween, but when the day finally came he only wore his Lego movie t-shirt. It was pretty warm inside the convention center, a cape probably would have gotten too hot.

He liked the kid area, where they had a Lego display from local building clubs as well as a building zone filled with duplo and normal lego bricks. He also stopped for nearly every Star Wars character he saw, making sure to point them out to us. It meant we stopped a lot. Quince attended the convention Friday afternoon and most of Saturday.

He is always wanting to build new things, often with the help of Dad. What ends up happening is he instructs Dad on what he wants built and Dad builds it. Already this has started to flip so he is building more himself, I expect the trend to continue. As he understand how things work together more, he’ll be building more for himself. The largest hurdle at the moment is design communication. Occasionally, Quince simply doesn’t how to explain how he wants it done leaving room for Richard to come up with it a way to get the end result. There have been times when Richard completed the desired item only to have Quince get upset because there wasn’t something right about it. For a couple months he was really into making a trailer that would fit all three of his race cars together. Richard’s trailer was a huge success.

Beginning of May, he played hooky from pre-school at my encouragement so that we could go out to a beach in Seiku. Our goal was a relaxed day filled with hunting for sea glass. Quince enjoyed not only sitting on the beach but also looking for sea glass, shells, and other interesting beach items.

Since we fixed Richard’s front tooth, Quince has been asking to go to the dentist. Although I booked him an appointment a few months ago, their first opening was at the end of May. They were able to get a couple x-rays, clean and floss his teeth, as well as a full check by the dentist herself. He was very pleased to be part of their “No cavity club”.

A few days ago Nikki and I took the kids out to Graysmarsh Farm for strawberry picking. Unfortunately, we arrived with only 10 minutes before closing time. However, I still picked about 4 pounds and Nikki got about 2 pounds. They were over for dinner that night our dessert of choice– fresh strawberries with chocolate ganache dip. These two have no idea how lucky they are!

An afternoon or two ago we visited our friend Doug Gailey at the Port Angeles High School band room. I dropped in at the end of the day, when he’s teaching the percussion class. Instead of leaving right away, we stuck around to listen to them play. Quince loves music so it seemed like the right thing to do. Upon getting home, Quince set up “band” and played away for me. I could tell he was 100% inspired by Doug’s students. He presented about a 15 minute performance of percussion rhythms,  using his concert bells along with a marker container and the new frisbee he got. Music is far reaching and well worth the investment!
