Earning water-wings

A few weeks ago we went to the local pool for the first time. There we met a couple friends from pre-school as a water playdate of sorts. That was just the beginning…

Four lessons later, Quince is now going under the water and waving at friends. Looking back at when we met Diego and Harper at the pool with their parents, I wouldn’t have thought that Quince would be ok with going under the water so quickly. At that time, it was all I could do to be able to move my own legs while he had a death grip around them. If I tried to get him to let go, there was major freak out. The plus is that by the time we left, he was happily floating on a kick board. I should have known that would be how ever lesson would go: beginning very hesitant to do anything, by the end not wanting to leave at all. In fact, while at his most recent lesson I realized that if I don’t get lessons I will fall too far behind.

We chose to do private lessons for him. The reason for this steams from a combination of different things coming together. One of the most important is that the window for class lesson sign ups is really small and fills up very quickly. Another is that Quince gets really nervous at times, especially in a crowd and we wanted to make sure he felt comfortable enough to want to continue going. Both of us feel very strongly about knowing how to swim, likely because we don’t swim well, so having him desire to go is important step in being successful.

Afterwards it’s not surprising to find him sleeping in a weird place, hungry or cranky. Much like the photo I used on this post. That was a post swimming lesson day.

We are really proud of him for doing well, as is his swim teacher.
